Space Invaders è un videogioco giapponese pubblicato nel 1978 da Taito.
È stato sviluppato da Tomohiro Nishikado, che si è ispirato ad altri media come Breakout, La guerra dei mondi e Star Wars.
Space Invaders è stato uno dei precursori dei videogiochi moderni e ha contribuito all'espansione dell'industria dei videogiochi da novità a industria globale.
Come Champion, Space Invaders è stato un vero e proprio pioniere e ha contribuito a spianare la strada per il futuro: è stato il primo videogioco a rendere popolare il concetto di raggiungimento di un punteggio elevato, il primo a salvare il punteggio del giocatore, il primo in cui più nemici potevano rispondere al fuoco del giocatore e, a differenza dei precedenti giochi arcade, Space Invaders ha introdotto il concetto di andare avanti round dopo round.
È stato anche primo gioco in cui i giocatori avevano a disposizione più vite, dovevano respingere le orde di nemici, potevano ripararsi dal fuoco nemico e utilizzare barriere distruttibili, oltre a essere il primo gioco a utilizzare una utilizzare una colonna sonora di sottofondo continua.
